Beginning in 2009, the Newton Schools Foundation in collaboration with Newton Public Schools began a high impact initiative to support the 21st Century Classroom and to digitally enable every classroom in Newton. This campaign to advance the learning experience through technology will ensure that our students develop 21st century skills and teachers have the necessary tools and training to make this possible.

What is a 21st Century Classroom?

  • Interactive whiteboard
  • Projector
  • Teacher tablet
  • Student response systems
  • Professional development and IT support

To learn more about these tools please visit: NPS Interactive Tools

Our goal is to outfit all Newton Public School classrooms with these interactive tools over the next 3 to 5 years. The 2009/10 school year has served as a pilot year for this initiative, with each of the four middle schools equipped with at least one 21st Century Classroom suite. In addition, a pilot classroom at Bigelow Middle School was the focus of a compressive evaluation by a research team from Boston College’s Lynch School of Education. Results from this study will be available this fall.

Working together with NPS and the Parent Teacher Organizations, the Foundation is proud to announce the installation of at least one 21st Century Classroom at each of the 15 elementary schools in August 2010. To ensure this interactive technology is ready for our students this fall, teachers will have various opportunities for training throughout the summer.  Our next immediate priority is to complete installations in the remaining 5th grade classrooms as soon as possible.
